WASHINGTON, DC- After a successful spring break trip, the Highlanders came back to earth a bit in their first games back. Playing a tough Gallaudet University squad, the Highlanders fell in both games, losing the first 1-9 and the second 5-13.
In game one, the Highlanders struggled to hit Gallaudet's excellent starter Alyssa Barlow- managing only two hits in the first game. Cairn's own ace, Krista Earl, shut down Gallaudet after a tough first inning, The Highlanders edged closer in the fourth when McKenna Schindele singled through a hole in the left side of the infield to start a Cairn rally. Schindele advanced to second on a sac bunt from Haley Tinney, and Meagan Maratita knocked Schindele home with ease, crushing a double down the left field line. Unfortunately, Gallaudet would bounce back and finish with a 4 run 6th inning to put the game out of reach.
The Highlanders bats came alive in game two, jumping on Gallaudet's starter for four runs in the first inning. Center fielder Sony MacBain walked and stole second the set the table, Haley Tinney walked, Meagan Maratita singled, and McKenna Schindele knocked the Highlanders first run home with a ground ball. After alert baserunning from Haley TInney plated another run, Krista Earl cleared the bases with a 2 RBI triple in the right-center gap. The Bison bounced back with 8 runs over the next two innings, before once again solidifying the game with a big final inning.
The Highlanders will take on Brooklyn College Wednesday night, first pitch is slated for 5:00 PM.
