LANGHORNE, PA- The Highlanders entered the CSAC playoffs as the third seed, hosting the Bryn Athyn Lions for a quarterfinal matchup and continuing to make history by winning the first CSAC playoff contest for Cairn women's soccer since the Highlanders joined the conference ten years ago.
Cairn defeated Bryn Athyn earlier this season when the Highlanders' Ruitto duo linked up for a 91
st minute goal, and entered today's contest with great confidence after going on an incredible run over the second half of the season.. The first thirty minutes passed without much fanfare as each team played tentatively, not wanting to give up the afternoon's first goal.
Sara Hayduchok made her mark in the 33
rd minute with an incredible weaving run through the Bryn Athyn defense, with just the goalie to beat Hayduchok expertly slotted her 8
th of the season into the bottom right corner, giving the Highlanders a 1-0 victory. The Highlanders have played well with a lead the entire season and today's match was no different, Cairn ratcheted up the pressure which paid off in the 42
nd minute when
Dakota Hitchner struck a high-arching shot that floated over the Lions' keeper and into the top right corner of the net.
Playing with a 2-0 cushion, Cairn controlled the second half, content to possess and rely on their stellar passing to coast to the victory. When the final whistle blew, the Highlanders had officially completed their first playoff victory 2-0 over Bryn Athyn, another notch in the belt of an already incredible season.
Cairn will travel to Cedar Crest College tomorrow, 10/31, for the CSAC Semifinal game which is set to kick off at 7:00 PM.
