Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Highlanders Bounced by Bulldogs

BROOKLYN, NY- Cairn women's soccer traveled to the city tonight, dropping a close contest against the Bulldogs of Brooklyn College.

The Highlanders bounced back after a tough weekend, fighting hard against Brooklyn College in tonight's bout. The Bulldogs threatened first, testing keeper Haley Tinney numerous times over the first 20 minutes. However, the freshman, gaining experience by the day, was able to deny each of the shots and corner kicks sent her way. Captain Courtney Novak began to take control for the Highlanders, initiating the action and sending multiple shots at the Brooklyn net. Novak gave the Highlanders the lead in the 39th minute when the midfielder gathered a loose ball and lashed a powerful shot home from 20 yards out. The half ended with the Highlanders leading the Bulldogs 1-0, thanks in large part to Novak's goal and the excellent play by Tinney, who saw 7 shots and made 4 saves.

The Cairn attacker's pressed the Bulldog defense immediately in the second half, with two corners and two shots within the first ten minutes. Despite the Highlanders organization in the back, Brooklyn netted the tying in the 66th minute tying the matchup 1-1. The match held at a standstill for the next 20 minutes until forward Sangam Gurun broke through the Highlander defense scoring the eventual game winner.

Cairn was led by Novak who had 1 goal and 3 shots, Tinney with 7 saves, and the ever-steady play of midfielder Katie Ruitto

The Highlanders are back in action Wednesday when they host the Gwynedd Mercy Griffins at 4 PM for the second conference match of the season.
