Gwynedd Valley, PA - On Monday afternoon, the Cairn baseball team was looking to complete a three-game series sweep against the Gwynedd Mercy Griffins. The Griffins used four runs in the first three innings and added six more in the fifth to take a 10-0 lead.
The Highlanders scored a single runs in the sixth, seventh, and ninth, but could not complete the comeback falling by an 11-3 final.
Andrew Philips was the lone Highlander with multiple hits in the contest, going 2-4 in the game. Eight of Cairn's nine starters collected at least one hit in the game.
Emilio Alvarez connected for his first career home run with a shot down the left field line in the top of the ninth.
Kam Bradshaw took the loss for the Highlanders going four innings while allowing four runs (all earned) on five hits and four walks.
Eric Stinglen tossed 3.1 innings of one-run relief.
The Griffins broke through with a two-out, three-run homer in the bottom of the second to give Gwynedd Mercy a 3-0 lead. In the fourth the Griffins got a sacrifice fly to add a fourth run.
In the early innings, the Highlanders struggled to generate offense leaving just a single runner on in the first, second and fourth.
In the fifth inning the Griffins exploded for six runs on seven hits to take a 10-0 lead over the Highlanders.
Cairn got a run back in the sixth when
Nathan Wilson scored on wild pitch after he singled earlier in the inning. The Highlanders struck for another run in the seventh, when
Andrew Philips singled to right center to plate
Daniel Morales from third. The run closed the gap to 10-2, but the Griffins got the run back in the bottom of the frame.
After a scoreless eighth,
Emilio Alvarez connected for a home run down the left field line. Alvarez homer was a solo shot that pulled the Highlanders within eight at 11-3. Cairn could not plate another run and fell by the 11-3 final.
The loss drops the Highlanders to 11-6 on the season and 3-3 in the CSAC. Cairn will next take the field tomorrow afternoon when they host Clarks Summit in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
