La Plume, PA – The Cairn softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader against the Keystone Giants on Friday afternoon. The Giants scored early and often in the first game to take a 21-2 victory. Game Two was a tight game into the third inning, but Keystone broke a 2-2 tie with a run in the third before scoring seven runs in the fourth and fifth to complete the sweep with a 10-2 win in the second game.
Meagan Maratita led the offensive effort with a 4-5 effort at the plate with three doubles and a run scored.
Game One – Keystone defeats Cairn 21-2
The Giants scored 15 runs in the first two innings en route to a comfortable 21-2 victory in the first game of the doubleheader. Rylei Fitch smacked a grand slam in the first inning to get the hit parade started for the Giants. In the game, Keystone hit four home runs.
The Highlanders got both of their runs in the fourth inning.
Meagan Maratita started the rally with a double to left field. After two infield singles, the Highlanders had the bases loaded with no outs.
Jessica Rolo then delivered a single to right field to chase Maratita home and put the Highlanders on the board. The next batter was
Charlotte Camp, she grounded out to second, but brought home
Angela Paskitti in the process.
A strike out and a ground out ended the inning, but the Highlanders had put two runs on the board with four hits in the inning.
At the dish, Maratita and Rolo each collected two hits with Maratita adding a stolen base.
In the circle, Maratita took the loss with two innings of work. She allowed 15 runs (13 earned) on 13 hits and three walks.
Haley Tinney worked the final two frames, allowing six earned runs on five hits.
Sha Dermont led six Giants with multi-hit games, the right field went 5-5 at the plate with a home run, four RBI, and four runs scored.
Game Two – Keystone defeats Cairn 10-2
While the Giants ran away with Game One, the second game of the doubleheader went a much more balanced affair for the first three innings.
Heading to the fourth the Highlanders trailed 3-2, but the Giants scored seven runs across the fourth and fifth to take the 10-2 victory.
Cairn struck first with a run in the top of the first thanks to back-to-back doubles from
Haley Tinney and Maratita to lead off the game. After a one-two-three bottom of the first the Highlanders led 1-0 through the first.
The Giants got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the second thanks to a sacrifice fly and a double to left field.
With the Highlanders now trailing 2-1 heading to the third,
Vanessa Munoz led off the inning with a bunt single. After a
Haley Tinney single to left, the Highlanders had runners on first and second with no outs. Maratita then ripped her third double of the day to center field. Munoz scored easily, but Tinney was caught in a rundown between third and home and eventually tagged out trying to score on the hit. Maratita was also tagged out on the play following the rundown with Tinney.
The play tied the game at 2-2, but the Giants quickly regained the lead with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the third.
The top of the third was Cairn's last chance, as the Highlanders went down in order in both the fourth and fifth. Keystone went on to plate five runs in the fourth and added two-more in the fifth. A single to center in the fifth, put the Giants up eight and enacted the run-rule ending the game at 10-2.

Meagan Maratita each went 2-2 with Maratita collecting two doubles and driving home both runs.
The Highlanders will wrap up their 2017 season tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader at Rosemont College. The first game is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.
