Highlanders End 2017 Season with Split at Rosemont

Rosemont, PA – The Cairn softball teamed wrapped up the 2017 season with a doubleheader split at the Rosemont Ravens on Saturday afternoon. The Highlanders edged the Ravens 4-3 in the first game, thanks to a seventh inning RBI groundout by Katelynn Reiss before falling in Game Two 8-0.

Jessica Rolo led the offensive effort with three hits on the afternoon.

In the circle, Meagan Maratita went 1-1 tossing a total of eight innings on the day. In Game One she threw a complete game and earned the victory allowing just three runs (two earned) on nine hits. She started Game Two, but lasted just an inning allowing three runs.

Game One – Cairn defeats Rosemont 4-3
The Highlanders jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in Game One on Saturday afternoon. Angela Paskitti delivered a one-out double to left center to Meagan Maratita, who had singled earlier in the inning. Katelynn Reiss then brought home Paskitti on a sacrifice fly to put Cairn up 2-0.

The Ravens put a runner on in both the first and second, but were unable to plate a run until the fourth. With the Highlanders still leading 2-0 heading to the fourth the Ravens knotted the score with a pair of RBI-singles. With two outs, Lena Buccigrossi and Melissa Lynch each knocked singles to tie the game at 2-2.

Cairn quickly countered with a run in the fifth thanks to a two-out rally of their own. Haley Tinney started with a two-out single, before Maratita put runners on second and third with a double. Paskitti then reached on an error, allowing Tinney to hustle home from third.

Rosemont plated a run of their own in the fifth to tie the score yet again. After a one out single, Bailey Schulte attempted to steal second. She nabbed second successfully and the throw went into centerfield allowing Schulte to scamper around third and score on the play.

After a scoreless sixth, the Ravens and Highlanders stood even heading to the seventh. Cairn's first two batters reached on errors and after a single loaded the bases, Katelynn Reiss grounded out to second base to plate the go-ahead run. Cairn stranded two runners in scoring position in the inning after a fly out and a ground out ended the inning, but it did not matter as Rosemont was unable to score in the bottom half of the inning and the Highlanders took Game One 4-3.

Game Two – Rosemont defeats Cairn 8-0
The second game of the doubleheader belonged to Charlie Filmore in the circle. The sophomore twirled a complete game shutout, her first of the season. She allowed just three hits and struck out five en route to her second win of the season.

The Highlanders mustered one hit in the second and two in the third, but were unable to plate a run.

Rosemont on the other hand had no problem scoring runs, they plated three in both the first and second to take an early 6-0 lead.

The Ravens added a single run in the fourth and another in the fifth to close out the game with a run-rule victory. A bases loaded walk ended the game with one out in the fifth.

The Highlanders wrap up the 2017 season with a record of 14-20 overall and 2-20 in the CSAC. The 14 wins this season are a 13-game improvement from last season.
