Langhorne, PA – The Cairn softball team hosted the Centenary Cyclones for a CSAC doubleheader on Friday afternoon. The Cyclones got the better of the Highlanders in the double-dip, defeating Cairn by scores of 12-0 and 14-3.
Katelynn Reiss led the offense with three hits on the day; all three came in the second game of the doubleheader.
Game One – Centenary defeats Cairn 12-0
The Centenary Cyclones scored multiple runs in four of their five trips to the plate en route to a comfortable 12-0 victory over the Highlanders in Game One. Centenary jumped out and scored two runs in the top of the first before adding three more in both the second and third to take an 8-0 lead.
The Highlanders left three runners in scoring position in the first two innings. In the first,
Haley Tinney walked to leadoff the game, but was left stranded at third when a groundout ended the inning. In the second, Cairn loaded the bases with one away, but a double-play ended the threat without the Highlanders scoring a run.
Centenary turned the Highlanders away in order in the third and fourth, before expanding their lead to 12-0 with four runs in the fifth.
In the bottom of the fifth, Cairn strung three singles together with one out to put pressure on the Cyclones, but a runner was cut down at the plate to keep Cairn off the board and the next batter popped up to end the game. Centenary earned the 12-0 victory in Game One.
In the circle, both pitchers went the distance with Centenary's Samantha Darling earning the victory with five shutout innings. She scattered five hits and two walks while striking out three to improve to 7-8.
Meagan Maratita took the loss allowing 12 runs (nine earned) on 13 hits and three walks over five innings.
Jenna Alshay led the Highlander's offense with a 2-2 effort, while Justine Stefura paced the Cyclones with a 4-4 game with four RBI and four runs.
Game Two – Centenary defeats Cairn 14-3
The Cyclones picked up right where they left off in Game One. Centenary scored eight runs in the top of the first, thanks to three errors and four walks. The big blow came on a three-run double off the bat of Ashley Eisenstein to left center.
Cairn got on the board by stealing a run in the bottom of the second. With runners on the corners and two outs,
Vanessa Munoz broke for second. Munoz swiped second and the catcher's throw went into center field allowing her to move up to third. On the throw,
Alexandra Nathan broke for the plate and made it safely. With the ball still in center, Munoz try to score as well, but was gunned down at the plate with a strong throw from Alexis Wilson in the outfield.
Leading 8-1, Centenary put the game away with a six-run third inning. The Cyclones smacked nine hits in the frame to score their six runs and take a 14-1 lead.
Cairn scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth when
Katelynn Reiss smoked a two-run double over the right fielder's head to score
Meagan Maratita and
Haley Tinney. The late runs were not enough as Centenary held on for the 14-3 victory.
Katelynn Reiss was a perfect 3-3 at the plate with two singles and the two-run double in the fifth to lead Cairn.
The Highlanders will be right back at it tomorrow afternoon when they host Marywood in a doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m. The Highlanders will honor their seniors with a senior day ceremony prior to tomorrow's first game.
