Gwynedd Valley, PA – The Cairn softball team struggled to string hits together on Tuesday afternoon eventually dropping a pair of contests to the Gwynedd Mercy Griffins by scores of 20-0 and 19-0. The Griffins scored in all by two innings on the day. For Cairn,
Haley Tinney accounted for two of the Highlanders' five hits on the day finishing with a 2-4 effort with a double in Game One.
Game One – Gwynedd Mercy defeats Cairn 20-0
The Griffins' Alexis Gartner dominated Game One scattering three hits across five shutout innings. The freshman needed just 55 pitches to shut down the Highlanders. Gartner struck out one batter and walked none in her third victory of the season.
For the Highlanders, things started out promising as
Haley Tinney ripped a double to left field to lead off the game. Unfortunately, she was thrown out at third trying to stretch the base hit to a triple.
In the second the Highlanders pieced two hits together, but left a runner in scoring position when a ground out ended the frame. The two-hit rally was as close as the Highlanders would get to plating a run.
Gwynedd Mercy scored three times in the first before exploding for 12 runs on eight hits in the second to take a commanding 15-0 lead. The Griffins expanded their lead with five more runs in the third.
Jessica Behr led the Griffins with a 4-5 effort with a double at the dish. She drove home five runs and scored four of her own.
Meagan Maratita took the loss for the Highlanders in the circle and fell to 8-6 on the season. She went two innings and allowed 15 runs (six earned) on 12 hits and two walks.
Game Two – Gwynedd Mercy defeats Cairn 19-0
Much like Game One, the second game of the doubleheader was dominated by the Griffins. Gwynedd Mercy scored 14 runs across the first and second inning and in the circle Alyssa Morales held the Highlanders in check allowing two hits across five innings to earn her eighth victory of the season.
Meagan Maratita singled with one away in the top of the first and
Haley Tinney knocked an infield single in the top of the third. Both runners were stranded and the Highlanders were held scoreless in the game.

Haley Tinney took the loss allowing 14 runs (eight earned) on nine hits and six walks.
The Highlanders will next take the field on Friday when they host Centenary University in a CSAC doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
