Washington, D.C. - The Cairn softball team swept the Trinity Washington Tigers on Saturday afternoon by scores of 11-0 and 15-5 to improve to .500 on the season.
Meagan Maratita,
Katelynn Reiss, and
Katelyn Loveless each collected six hits each on the day to lead the Cairn offense.
Game One - Cairn defeats Trinity (DC) 11-0
The Cairn Highlanders wasted no time denting the scoreboard on Saturday afternoon. Just two batters into the game the Highlanders held a 1-0 lead after
Haley Tinney walked to lead off the game and
Meagan Maratita tripled to center field to bring her home. Two batters later,
Katelynn Reiss sent a sacrifice fly to center that chased home Maratita to double the Cairn lead at 2-0.
After a scoreless bottom of the first, the Highlanders added another run with
Katelyn Loveless doubling home
Jenna Alshay.
The Cairn lead held firm at 3-0 into the top of the fourth when the Highlanders would tack on four runs to push their advantage to 7-0.
Alexandra Nathan and
Angela Paskitti each singled home one run in the rally while Maratita ripped a two-run double to left.
In the fifth the Highlanders turned their 7-0 lead into an 11-0 advantage with a four-run rally. Loveless and
Keely Congleton each drove home runs with RBI singles, but it was Tinney that delivered the big blow with a two-run double that pushed the lead to double-digits.
The Tigers threatened with two runners in the bottom of the fifth, but they could not put a tally on the board and Cairn earned the 11-0, run-shortened victory.
In the circle,
Meagan Maratita earned the victory working three innings while allowing one hit and two walks. She struck out three to earn her eighth win of the season.
Haley Tinney tossed two innings of scoreless relief, allowing no hits and three walks.
At the dish, Maratita and
Katelyn Loveless each collected three hits with Maratita driving home a team-high three runs to lead the Highlanders.
Game Two - Cairn defeats Trinity (DC) 15-5
In Game Two it was the Tigers that got on the board first. After turning the Highlanders away in order in the top of first, Trinity plated two with a two-run single by Airiona Mann.
Cairn got a run back in the top of the second. Three-straight singles loaded the bases and a double-play ball off the bat of
Katelyn Loveless brought home
Katelynn Reiss from third in the process.
In the third the Highlanders took their first lead of the game with a three-run frame. Meagam Maratita singled up the middle with one-out to drive home
Keely Congleton, who had tripled to lead off the inning. Two batters later
Katelynn Reiss hit a fly ball to center to bring home Maratita and
Jessica Rolo followed with a double to plate the third and final run of the frame.
The 4-2 lead for Cairn did not last long as the Tigers scored two runs on a pair of singles in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 4-4.
With the game tied at 4-4 the Highlanders put together a hit parade to score seven runs in the top of the fourth. Cairn registered eight hits in the frame, including two doubles and a triple to take an 11-4 lead. Six different Highlanders recorded an RBI in the inning with Maratita being the lone Highlander to drive home multiple runs with a two-run triple to right field.
The Tigers scored one run in the bottom of the fourth before the Highlanders tacked on four insurance runs across the sixth and seventh en route to the 15-5 victory. The highlight of the final frames was a solo home run off the bat of
Katelynn Reiss to lead off the sixth. The homer was her second of the season.
In the circle,
Haley Tinney went the distance for Cairn earning her third victory of the season while allowing five runs (all earned) on six hits and five walks. Tinney struck out eight batters while moving to her season record to 3-3.
The Highlanders will next take the field on Tuesday when they travel to Gwynedd Mercy to take on the Griffins in a CSAC doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
