Highlanders Edged in Pair of Pitcher's Duels

Langhorne, PA - The Marywood Pacers took both ends of a doubleheader against the Cairn Highlanders on Saturday afternoon. Marywood edged out Cairn 2-1 in a pitcher's duel in the first game of the doubleheader before taking a 3-1 victory in Game Two.

Game One – Marywood defeats Cairn 2-1
In the first game, Marywood led 1-0 heading into the seventh, but the Highlanders rallied to tie the score in the top of the seventh (Cairn played both games on Saturday as the away team due to the location change). With a runner on second and one away, Emilio Alvarez singled through the right-side to bring home pinch runner Cam Kantner to tie the game at 1-1.

The Highlanders could not push across a second run and in the bottom of the seventh the Pacers used a hit-by-pitch to get a base runner. A wild pitch and a groundout moved the runner to third before an error, Cairn's only error of the afternoon, allowed the winning run to score and give Marywood the win in walk-off fashion.

The game was a true pitcher's duel; starters Daniel Morales and James Goetz each allowed just one run. Morales allowed eight hits in six innings of work while striking out five batters. Goetz went the distance scattering seven hits over seven innings while striking out three. Goetz earned the win, this third of the season against no losses, while Morales was once again no decisioned.

The Pacers scored their first run in the bottom of the third. Trevor Power doubled down the right field line and Goetz knocked him home with a single to help his own cause. It looked like that single run was going to be enough for the Pacers until the Highlanders got the bats going a little in the top of the seventh.

At the dish, Joshua Field was the only Highlander to knock multiple hits. The catcher was 2-2 in the game with a walk and a double.

Game Two – Marywood defeats Cairn 3-1
In Game Two, the Pacers scored three runs in the fourth inning and made them hold up in the second pitcher's duel of the day. The Highlanders pushed one run across on a Brendan Keller single in the fifth, but it was not enough as the Pacers outlasted Cairn to sweep the doubleheader and take two out of three in the series.

Sam Dralle tossed six strong innings scattering nine hits and allowing those three fourth inning runs while striking out seven. Dralle pitched out of trouble early in the game leaving the bases loaded in the second and stranding two in the third.

After wiggling out of a jam in two consecutive innings, Dralle was unable to make it three-straight when the Pacers struck for three runs in the fourth. Two straight one-out singles put runners on first and second for James Goetz who had the hit of the game with a two-run double to right-center. Later in the inning Goetz scored on a groundout to make it a 3-0 lead.

The Highlanders did respond with a run of their own in the top of the fifth. Joshua Field tucked a double down the right field line and came home on a two-out single off the bat of Brendan Keller to make it 3-1. Cairn could not push across another run and eventually fell by the 3-1 final.

On the day the Highlanders were led offensively by Nathan Wilson (3-5, BB) and Joshua Field (3-4, BB, 2 2B, R).

With the pair of losses the Highlanders move to 8-5 on the season and 1-2 in the CSAC. Cairn will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Central Penn for a doubleheader. Game One is slated to begin at 1:00p.m.
