Lake Myrtle, FL - The Cairn Highlanders outlasted the Framingham State Rams on Thursday morning with a 6-5 victory in 11 innings. For a large majority of the game, the Highlanders held control thanks to the best pitching performance in the career of
Kameron Bradshaw.
Bradshaw baffled the Rams tossing 7.2 innings and allowing just three hits while letting just one unearned run. Bradshaw allowed one runner to reach in the third, sixth, and seventh before he got into a bit of trouble in the eighth. With Cairn holding a 3-0 lead, the Rams opened the frame with back-to-back singles. Bradshaw then punched out the next batter for the first out of the inning before inducing a pop up to second. A second-straight pop-up to second looked like it would end of the frame, but it was dropped allowing a run to score and the inning to continue.
Emilio Alvarez was called upon and struck out the only batter he faced swinging to end the eighth.
After Cairn left two runners on base in the ninth, the Rams pieced together a rally in the bottom of the ninth of Cairn's closer
Albert Taylor to tie the game and send the contest to extra innings. The Rams scored their two runs on singles to the left-side. The first a knock through the hole and the second a line-drive to left-center.
After a quiet 10th, the 11th produced five total runs between the two sides. Cairn scored first with three unearned runs thanks to a trio of Rams' errors.
Jacob Allen's single to start the inning was Cairn's only knock of the frame. Cairn scored two runs on separate throwing errors and another on a wild pitch.
With Cairn holding a 6-3 lead, the Highlanders called on
Caleb Maige to close the door. Maige allowed a double, a walk, and a single before being removed for
Eric Stinglen.
Stinglen entered in a 6-4 game, allowing just one of the two inherited runners to score and got the last three outs to give Cairn the 6-5 victory.
Prior to the eighth and ninth inning comeback by the Rams, the Highlanders posted a single run in three separate innings to stake their 3-0 advantage. Cairn scored three batters into the game on a
Nathan Wilson single over the second basemen's head. Wilson plated
Jacob Allen from third who reached on an error by the shortstop to start the game.
Cairn's second run came in the fifth inning when
Aaron Takacs chased Wilson home with a single to center. Wilson walked earlier in the inning and went to second on a wild pitch from the Rams.
In the seventh inning Allen reached on an error by the shortstop for a second time in the game. Allen then moved to second on a passed ball and swiped third with one out. After a strike out, Allen made a dash for the plate with the Rams' pitcher throwing from the wind-up. Allen slid in ahead of the tag and pushed the Highlanders' lead to 3-0.
It was the top half of the Highlanders' order that did the damage on Thursday morning. The first five hitters in Cairn's line-up collected all seven of their hits and scored all six of their runs.
Josh Field and
Aaron Takacs each went 2-4, to lead Cairn at the dish. Takacs and Wilson collected the only two RBI for Cairn on the day.
Thursday's game was a sloppy one between the two teams. Combined the Highlanders and Rams committed 13 errors and issued 11 walks.
Despite a tremendous outing for
Kameron Bradshaw, he was no decisioned in the contest. In relief,
Albert Taylor allowed his first two runs of the season but earned the victory, after pitching the ninth and 10th innings.
Eric Stinglen earned his first save of the season.
The win improves the Highlanders to 6-3 on the season and Cairn will wrap up their Spring Break Trip with a game against Knox College tomorrow morning at 9:15 a.m.
