Langhorne, PA - The Cairn men's basketball team sent four seniors out in style with a 78-66 victory over the visiting Centenary Cyclones on Wednesday night. Three Highlanders recorded double-doubles in the victory with
Gerroid Doughty II leading the way with 17 points and 14 rebounds.
Chris Uhrich (10 points, 13 rebounds) and
Zachary Dolton (11 points, 12 rebounds) joined Doughty with double-doubles in the win.
The Highlanders struggled to score early on and trailed 0-7 to start the game. Cairn then went on a 29-12 run to take a 10-point lead with 6:41 remaining in the half after a tip-in from
Jeremiah Harris.
Cairn then took a nine-point, 36-27 lead into the half before holding a double-digit lead for a majority of the second-half en route to the 78-66 victory.
In
Jason O'Connell's three seasons at Cairn the Highlanders are 2-1 on Senior Day and 3-0 in their final home game of the regular season.
As mentioned it did not look good early on for the Highlanders. Three and a half minutes into the game the Highlanders were 0-3 from the floor with three turnovers and trailed 7-0.
Seil Park changed that as he subbed in and immediately knocked down a little turn-around jumper from the left block to get Cairn on the board.
A minute later, Park struck again and after a defensive stop
Josh Decker hit one of his two threes on the evening to bring Cairn within two at 9-7. Three minutes after Decker's three,
Zachary Dolton made a three and Uhrich filled up the cup with a layup and the Highlanders took their first lead of the game at 14-13.
A three-pointer from Kyle Smith gave Centenary the lead back momentarily but a layup from
Jeremiah Harris on the next possession down the floor started an 11-0 run that saw the Highlanders take a 29-19 lead after a tip-in from Harris. During the 11-point burst, the Highlanders forced two turnovers and held the Cyclones to an 0-3 effort from the floor, while scoring on all but one possession in a 2:50 span.
After Cairn built the 10-point lead they had no intention of giving it back. The Highlanders held a lead for the rest of the game. While Centenary did close with six-points on two occasions in the second-half the Highlanders responded and increased the cushions on both instances.
The final three minutes saw the Cyclones turn up the pressure and flip the momentum ever so slightly with a backcourt trap, but the Highlanders weathered the storm and made free throws late to secure the 12-point victory.
Along with the three double-doubles from Dolton, Doughty II, and Uhrich,
Jeremiah Harris finished with 16 points in the contest rounding out Cairn's double-digits scorers in the game.
The Highlanders will close out the regular season with a trip to Keystone on Saturday afternoon. Game time against the Giants is slated for 3:00 p.m.
