LANGHORNE, PA- After a big win against Davis College earlier this week, the Highlanders snagged their second win of the season tonight in exhilarating fashion against the visiting Nittany Lions of Penn State Berks University.
Â
The Highlanders started out a bit slowly, adjusting to the frenetic pace the Nittany Lions set. The quick pace and long range attack handed PSU-Berks a 16-8 lead. However, the Highlanders and
Kendra Stum bounced back to close the quarter trailing by 4 points. PSU-Berks led by as much as 10 points early in the second quarter, but an and-1 layup from
Payton Emerick and two straight threes from Jenna Krage quickly cut the deficit to one point. The Highlanders fought hard to keep it level, as
Victoria Stum posed an intimidating presence on defense, tallying 4 blocks in the first half. When
Charlotte Camp netted a jumper in the closing seconds, Cairn entered the half trailing 31-37.
Â
The Highlanders came storming back in the second half behind a flurry of jumpers from
Kendra Stum and the outstanding play of junior
Payton Emerick. Emerick, an incredible rebounder for her size, made her mark both offensively and defensively in today's contest, with her usual double digit rebounds and 2 steals pairing with an increased effort offensively to lead the Highlanders charge back. With a minute left to play the Highlanders
Victoria Stum came alive, scoring 6 straight points to keep the Highlanders hopes alive. Trailing by 2 points with 15 seconds to play, Emerick charged down the court, spinning into the lane and hoisting the game-tying layup towards the rim. When her attempt slid off the rim,
Kendra Stum arrived on the scene, gathering the miss and calmly finishing her layup to tie the game as time expired.
Â
Headed to overtime tied 70-70,
Charlotte Camp and
Payton Emerick stepped up in a major way, as Camp netted two straight layups and Emerick went a perfect 6-6 from the foul line to give the Highlanders the win. When Kylie Herman's three pointer caromed off the rim, and
Aigner Bookard drained two more free throws the Highlanders had completed the victory by a final score of 75-70.
Â
Emerick and
Kendra Stum both tallied double-doubles as Emerick finished with 24 and 11, and Stum finished with 18 and 11.
Victoria Stum did a little bit of everything with 9 points, 10 rebounds, and an incredible 7 blocks.
Â
The Highlanders will have a long break as they don't play again until December 30
th at Medgar Evers College.
