LANGHORNE, PA- The Highlanders dropped their season-opener against the Nittany Lions of Penn State Harrisburg by a score of 52-38.
Â
With a large number of key returners, the Highlanders are very optimistic about the upcoming season and tonight's loss to the Nittany Lions does not at all damper these hopeful expectations. Cairn started off slowly in tonight's contest, as Penn State jumped out to a 7-1 lead after a Janel Brown three pointer. The Highlanders battled back over the next couple minutes as Tori Stum,
Aigner Bookard, and
Charlotte Camp would each net jumpers. The Stum sisters (Tori and Kendra) each played an excellent first half, connecting perfectly on the pick and roll multiple times over the first 20 minutes of play. The Highlanders won the second quarter by two points but trailed by four at the break.
Kendra Stum and Tori Stum each tallied 7 points over the opening two frames.
Â
The Highlanders were blitzed at the start of the third quarter as PSU-Harrisburg mounted a 10-4 run to jump out to a commanding lead. The third quarter deficit proved too much to overcome, as the Highlanders shots simply stopped falling in the second half. Cairn shot only 37% from the foul line and 18% from three on the night. These shooting percentages coupled with a 56-21 rebounding margin were the Highlanders demise as Cairn dropped to 0-1 on the season.
Â
Kendra Stum finished with 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists while Tori Stum tallied 9 points as well. Cairn will look to rebound when they host the City College of New York this Saturday at 1:00 PM.
