NEWARK, NJ – Women's volleyball met with Rutgers-Newark Thursday night and fell by a score of 3-0 in the penultimate match of their season. The Highlanders were riding high after a spectacular win against Bryn Athyn on Tuesday, but their spirits were tempered when they faced off with the Scarlet Raiders in tonight's matchup.
The Highlanders put up a solid fight in the first set, but their efforts were simply not enough to hold off Rutgers-Newark's attack. Freshman Lyntia Gwess collected multiple kills in the first set to lead the charge for the Highlanders. Added in the mix with offensive support were Haley Sheehan, Brie Norton, and Brooke Seidel who each collected kills in the first set. Cairn put a couple multiple point runs together late in the set, but it was not enough to secure a victory.
The second set was firmly controlled by the Scarlet Raiders. The Highlanders attempted to spark an attack with a few point streaks, but were not able to string together enough momentum and dropped the second set as well.
Seeking to extend the match, the third set was a battle to the very end. The Scarlet Raiders started out hot with a 6-point lead, but Cairn quickly countered with a four point run, boosted by an ace from Gwess. Sheehan led the Highlander offense in the third set with several kills and aces throughout, but Cairn ultimately fell in the set and the match.
The Highlanders will be back at home for their senior day on Saturday the 28th at 1:00pm to finish off the regular season.
