Langhorne, PA- On a sloppy, rainy senior day, the Highlanders hosted their season finale against Cedar Crest College and fell by a final score of 0-2.
Â
Cairn honored the careers of their five stellar seniors before the game. This was the last game for four year players
Kelsey Lewis,
Natalie Lyon,
Courtney Novak,
Mackenzie Paugh, and two year player
Elizabeth Selle. Each of these players contributed greatly to the program over their time as Highlanders.
Courtney Novak ends her career as one of the most impressive offensive performers in Highlander history. The midfielder is ranked 2
nd overall for career assists, 4
th for career goals, and 4
th for career points. Novak is also in a tie for the single-game school record with 4 goals, and has the 3
rd best single game performance with 8 points in a game. In addition to Novak's offensive excellence, the Highlanders will also be graduating one of their most decorated defensive players as well in goalkeeper
Mackenzie Paugh. Paugh is 1
st all-time in Cairn history for career wins and career shutouts. The keeper has 394 career saves as well, which ranks 2
nd all-time. In addition to the exploits of Paugh and Novak, Lyon and Lewis have each started and played at an incredibly high lever for 50 plus games over their career, while Selle has been a pivotal member over her last two seasons.
Â
After the senior day festivities, the Highlanders were woken up quickly when Cedar Crest's excellent forward Daria Warner flew past the Cairn backline and slipped a shot under the outstretched arms of goalkeeper
Mackenzie Paugh. The Highlanders gave up a second goal as well in the 18
th minute and were staked to a quick 0-2 deficit. The Highlanders thoroughly owned the rest of the half with multiple great chances on net, but were unable to find a crucial goal; perhaps due to the slick, rain-covered pitch. When the final whistle blew, the curtain was drawn on the 2017 Cairn women's soccer season. The Highlanders had an excellent first season under Coach
Kristina O'Connell, going 6-5 over their final 11 matches. Considering Coach O'Connell joined the Highlanders partway through the season, Cairn can readily look forward to more success next season.
