Arcadia Tops Highlanders to Open Knight Invitational

Glenside, PA – The Cairn men's volleyball team began the Knight Invitational on Friday night with a match against the host Arcadia Knights. The Highlanders fell in straight sets, 3-0 (25-17, 27-25, 25-18) to the Knights. The victory for Arcadia was their first ever win in program history. The Knights fell in their first match in program history earlier on Friday evening with a 3-1 loss against Lancaster Bible College.

The Highlanders kept it close early in the first set. After an Andy Willits kill off a set from Ryan Ludvik the Highlanders trailed 5-4. A service error from the Highlanders started a 7-1 run for the Knights who took a 12-5 lead and never looked back in the first set.

Arcadia grew their lead to as many as nine at 22-13 and picked up the 25-17 victory to take a 1-0 lead.

The second set was a much closer affair, the Highlanders took a 9-8 lead after a service ace from Willits. The two sides traded points and the Highlanders staked a 19-17 lead. The Knights took a timeout and promptly went on a 5-1 run to take a 22-1 lead. Facing set point at 24-22, the Highlanders picked up two straight points to make it 24-24. The Knights won three of the final four points to take the second set 27-25.

The third set started off with a similar feel as the second set, the Highlanders and Knights were tied 12-12 after a 4-0 run for the Highlanders. That run was highlighted by kills from Willits and Juston Wolgemuth.

Cairn trailed by just one at 16-15 but the Knights finished the set off with a strong 9-3 run to take the set 25-18 and the match 3-0 (25-17, 27-25, 25-18).

Micah Godshall picked up seven kills in the match to lead three Highlanders with at least five kills. Andy Willits and Juston Wolgemuth connected for six and five kills respectively, while Ryan Ludvik dished out 17 assists in the match.

The Highlanders will have a busy day tomorrow as they take on another first-year program in the Alvernia Crusaders at 11:00 a.m. followed by matches with Lancaster Bible College and Wilkes University to wrap up the tournament.
