Kikendall Tallies as Highlanders Draw Hawks

Langhorne, PA - Brett Kikendall connected on a free kick in the 26th minute to give the Highlanders their first goal of the season on Saturday afternoon against the Hunter College Hawks. The Hawks countered with a goal of their own in the 71st minute to force overtime. Despite seven shots between the two teams in the two-overtime periods, no goals were found and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

The first five minutes of the game opened with a flurry of activity for the Highlanders. Cairn got off four shots in the opening stretch. The best opportunity came off the foot of Zack Nelson in the fourth minute. Nelson found the ball at his feet on the left side, just outside the six. He fired a shot to the near post but the Hunter keeper made a diving save to knock the shot out of bounds.

On the ensuing corner kick the Highlanders had an excellent chance on the second ball served into the box by Kikendall. The service found the head of Connor Eby, who knocked it into the back of the net. The goal was quickly wiped away on a very close off-sides call.

The Highlanders would get their goal twenty minutes later on their next shot. In the 26th minute, Corey Nolan carried the ball from midfield all the way to the top of the 18. A hard tackle stopped Nolan, but gave the Highlanders a free kick from about 21 yards out. As mentioned Kikendall stepped up and knocked through the free kick over the goalie's arms on the right side. The goal was the first of Kikendall's career and gave the Highlanders a 1-0 lead.

After the Cairn goal the Hawks pushed on the offensive end for the remained of the half. Hunter fired six shots in the final 15 minutes of the half and required Cairn goalie, Mark Heater, to make two saves to keep it a 1-0 game at the half.

After the break the Hawks continued their pressure until finally breaking through with the equalizer in the 71st minute. Carlos Aspiazu held the ball at the top of the 18 with five Highlanders around him. After looking to have initially lost possession, Aspiazu regained his composure and found an unmarked Aiden Tucker to his left. Tucker hammered home a shot from about 15 yards out right over Heater's head to tie the match at 1-1.

Both teams had chances in regulation to take an advantage, but neither could pull out the big goal.

With the scored tied 1-1 the match headed to overtime. Again, both teams had opportunities with Hunter putting a free kick from 25 yards well over the crossbar and Brendan Keller ripping a shot right at the keeper in the 97th minute.

The Hawks outshot the Highlanders 5-2 between both overtime periods, including a 4-1 advantage in the second overtime, but couldn't put a shot on goal in the overtime periods.

After 110 minutes the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

On the game the Hawks outshot the Highlanders 26-16, but trailed Cairn 7-6 in shots on goal.

Kikendall led the Highlanders with the tally as well as five shots in the match.
