Lions Roar Back To Defeat Highlanders in Home Opener

Langhorne, PA - The Highlanders took the first two sets on Wednesday night and it was looking like first win of the season was within reach. However with the score tied at 23-23 in the third set, the Bryn Athyn Lions rattled off the final two points of the set to take the third set 25-23 before winning the fourth set 25-15 and the final set 15-10 to take a 3-2 (23-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-15, 15-10) victory in the match.

Tonight's match was the first time that the Highlanders won multiple sets in a match since Nov. 1, 2014.

The night was filled with tight sets with nail-biting finishes. Each of the first three sets were won with less than a three point margin either way. The Highlanders opened the match with two of their best sets of the year.

For the second match in a row, the Highlanders started the match by winning the first set and took the early momentum of the match. Cairn won the set 25-23 and it was closely contested throughout. The Highlanders trailed 10-6 in the early going, before Haley Sheehan stepped to the service line and Cairn rattled off six-straight points to take a 12-10 lead.

Later in the set with the score even at 21-21, Brie Norton picked up one of her six kills on the night to start a 4-2 run for the Highlanders that carried them to the 25-23 victory. A kill from Sheehan was the capper on the run and gave Cairn momentum heading into the second set.

Playing with a lead for the second match in a row, Cairn did what they couldn't do against the College of Saint Elizabeth and picked up a victory in the second set. The majority of the set was level-pegging with neither team holding a lead of more than four throughout the set, though both teams led by at least three on multiple occasions.

It was Bryn Athyn that led at 15-12, but the Highlanders went on a quick 5-2 run that tied the score at 17-17. Just a few points later, Cairn used a 5-0 to take a 23-19 lead, the largest by either team in the set. The run was highlighted by three-straight service aces by Ashley Chamberlin. With a four-point edge, the Highlanders weathered three late points by the Lions and ended the set, yet again, on a Sheehan kill. Cairn picked up both the first (25-23) and second (25-22) sets by the slimmest of margins, but led 2-0 heading into the third set.

in the driver's seat heading into the third set for the first time in over a year, the Highlanders look poised to pick up with fist win of the 2016 season. An early six-point run in the third set fueled that notion as Cairn led 8-4 after a kill by Olivia Smiley. The next rally ended in a bad set by the Highlanders. That error began a 9-3 run for the Lions that saw them take a 15-14 lead.

Cairn responded with a 4-0 run to open up a three-point cushion at 18-15. After a Liz White service ace just a couple of points later the Highlanders led 20-17. A kill by Bryn Athyn's Taylor Davis on the next point opened an 8-3 run for the Lions that finished the set and handed Cairn their first dropped set of the night.

In set four the Highlanders jumped out to a hot start with a 4-1 run to open the set, unfortunately the Lions won the next five points to nullify the Highlanders' early advantage. A service ace from Kylie McCann pulled the Highlanders to within two points at 12-10, but it would be as close as Cairn would get for the remained of the set as the Lions ran away with the fourth set winning by a 25-15 margin.

The fourth set victory by the Lions set up a decisive fifth set played to 15. The short set was a game of runs. The Lions opened with three straight points before the Highlanders picked up six straight to take a 6-3 lead. An attack error by Taylor Davis gave the Highlanders the final point in that run and Bryn Athyn wisely took a timeout. Whatever was said in that breather for the Lions work, as Bryn Athyn put together the strongest run of the match winning 11 of the next 13 points to take a 14-8 lead. Facing match point, the Highlanders put up a fight winning the next two points, but it was too little too late as a kill from Catherine Kirk ended the match after an hour and 35 minutes of gut wrenching volleyball action.

Haley Sheehan turned in the performance of her career, thus far, with 18 kills and 27 digs - both team highs - to go along with three blocks (also a team high). Once again, Liz White upped her career-high in assists with 35 in tonight's match.

The loss drops the Highlanders to 0-4 on the season and they will have a quick turn around as they play again tomorrow night at Valley Forge. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
