Langhorne, PA – Cairn men's basketball took Rosemont College down to the wire but ultimately fell 92-89 on Wednesday night to the Ravens.
Julian Collazo scored a season-high 29 points shooting 70% from the floor (14-20), while
Gerroid Doughty II added 25 points and five assists.
However, the Highlanders had a difficult time defending Rosemont's leading scorer Marcus Thomas who ended the game with 32 points. Thomas made all nine of his attempts from the free-throw line; some of which were critical baskets down the stretch.
Cairn went into the halftime break down by 10, 41-31, but the Highlanders quickly took the lead down to single digits in the second half. Collazo cut the lead to three two separate times at about five minutes into the half by driving through the lane and getting to the hoop.
Midway through the second half,
Jordan Sharpe made a layup to cut the deficit to two, 64-62. Following that Collazo made four straight layups to put the Highlanders up by three, 70-67, with 7:29 on the clock.
However, Rosemont rattled of a 9-0 run from there and went ahead 76-70. The Highlanders eventually got the lead back down to one following a three-pointer by
Jeremiah Harris with three minutes to go.
Thomas took over for the Ravens at the end of the game and made Rosemont's last 11 points; the final six were all free throws. Gerroid Doughty made a three-pointer to bring the score to 90-89 but he was then forced to foul Thomas with seven seconds on the clock.
Following both made free throws, Doughty was given the ball to get the tying three-pointer with seconds left but his shot was just off the mark. With the loss, the Highlanders dropped to 7-13 overall and 3-10 in the conference.
Turnovers also plagued the Highlanders in the game, committing 17 total. Rosemont scored 28 points off of Cairn turnovers while turning the ball over just six times throughout the game.
The Highlanders will next travel to Keystone College this Saturday, Feb. 6, to take on the Giants.
