Langhorne, PA – Cairn men's basketball won their 10th game of the season on Saturday afternoon on senior day with a 90-80 victory over Summit University. The Highlanders have not seen double-digit wins in a season in 10 years (12 wins in 2005-06 season), which also marks this as the most successful season in the CSAC for men's basketball.
Four Highlanders finished with 12 points or more, including
Julian Collazo and
Kyle Bonner who each scored 20 points. The performance was Bonner's second straight game with 20 points and capped off his four-year career with Cairn. As a freshman, Collazo's effort in the game and this season will usher in a new wave of Cairn men's basketball players.
Jordan Sharpe and
JD Zamroz were also honored as seniors before the start of the game. Both players transferred into Cairn from other schools; Zamroz played for the previous three years, while Sharpe finished his second season.
Gerroid Doughty II finished with 18 points in the game on 8-17 shooting from the floor.
Josh Vlna played 30 minutes off the bench and collected 12 points in total. The Highlanders shot higher than average from the free throw line and scored 22 points from the charity stripe.
The Defenders quickly took a 12-4 lead in the beginning of the game but a 10-2 run by the Highlanders tied the game at 14-14. Summit led by as many as seven throughout the first half but Cairn once again came back to tie the game at 30-30; both game-tying baskets were three-pointers by
Josh Vlna.
The Highlanders then took a three-point lead, 36-39, but the Defenders then went on an 8-2 run to end the first half with a 44-41 advantage. Dan Decker led the Defenders in scoring with 20 points in the game, including 9-10 from the free-throw line. Abe Valentine finished with 17 points; all of which were scored in the first half.
Cairn and Summit traded the lead five times in the second half, with the Highlanders taking the lead for the final time at the 12:51 mark in the half. The Defenders later tied the game at 65-65 but could not go in front of the Highlanders.
The Highlanders stretched the lead out to six points with 6:10 left in the game after
Gerroid Doughty II stole the ball at the top of the key and finished with a dunk at the other end. Doughty also gave the Highlanders their largest lead of 12 after a three-pointer later in the half.
Summit brought their deficit back down to five with 42 seconds on the clock but when they were forced to foul the Highlanders, Cairn was up to the challenge and made their free throws.
Zachary Jackson made his four free throws to get the lead back up to nine points and
Jordan Sharpe added one more.
Cairn finished the 2015-16 season with a 10-15 overall record and 6-12 record in the conference with the win. Summit also ended their campaign with the game and dropped to 3-22 overall, and 3-15 in the conference.
