Abington Shoots the Lights Out, Drops Highlanders

Langhorne, PA - The Penn State - Abington women's basketball team shot a blistering 58.6% from beyond the arc making 17 of their 29 attempts in a 82-68 victory over the Cairn Highlanders. The Highlanders put together strong spurts of play, including an 11-0 run immediately following half-time, but were unable to sustain the play through the majority of the contest, ultimately falling by 14.

The Highlanders were led by another strong effort from Madelyn Brodish. The freshman collected her first-career double-double with 20 points and 15 rebounds in the loss. Kendra Stum and Aigner Bookard joined Brodish in double-figures with 19 and 13 points respectively.

The Nittany Lions were paced Shayna Rodriguez who poured in 27 points on the evening including 22 in the first-half. Rodriguez also snagged seven boards and was one of three Nittany Lions to hit at least four three-pointers with a 5-7 effort from downtown.

The Nittany Lions took the momentum early in the game, jumping out to a seven-point lead at the end of the first-quarter. The Nittany Lions led by as many as nine with the score at 20-11 after Shaderra Jenkins made a layup in transition.

The second quarter belonged to Shayna Rodriguez, she continued her stellar first-half by filling up the stat sheet with 12 points, two rebounds, two steals, and two assists in the period. In the quarter, Abington scored eight field goals. Rodriguez scored five of them and assisted on two others. The only play she wasn't involved in was a three-pointer by Symantha Marrero.

When the dust settled at half-time the Highlanders trailed by 10 at 43-33.

Following the break the Highlanders got Kendra Stum and Madelyn Brodish involved in the offense in a big way. The duo fueled an 11-0 run that led to the Highlanders briefly taking the lead back. During the 2:57 run, Stum scored eight and Brodish chimed in with three points.

The lead swung momentarily to Cairn, but the Abington three-point barrage rained in a pair of three's to open up a five-point lead. The Highlanders would counter and close the gap to as few as one-point on two instances, but Abington again hit back-to-back triples – both from Brittany Keyes – and opened up a seven point lead with 3:42 remaining in the quarter.

Including Keyes' threes, the Nittany Lions ended the quarter on a 14-3 run and held a 65-53 lead heading into the final stanza.

Right off the bat, the Nittany Lions hit two more threes in the first minute and change of the quarter to take an 18-point lead. The consecutive threes, made the lead insurmountable for the Highlanders. Cairn clawed to within 12 with 3:52, but couldn't get any closer. The Nittany Lions picked up the 82-68 victory.

The win was the first of the season for the Nittany Lions and the first career-victory for Abington's head coach Shayla Johnson.
