Langhorne, PA - The Cairn women's basketball team tipped off the home portion of the 2016-17 season with a 72-65 victory over the visiting Bryn Mawr Owls on Thursday night. The Highlanders saw all five of their starters go for 10-plus points in the victory with
Madelyn Brodish leading the way with 17 points in her second collegiate game.
Payton Emerick (14 points, 14 rebounds) and
Kendra Stum (15 points, 10 rebounds) each collected double-doubles in the game as the Highlanders picked up their first victory of the season.
Charlotte Camp (12 points) and
EJ Hartzler (11 points) also joined Brodish, Emerick, and Stum in double-figures.
The game opened with the Highlanders falling into a quick 7-2 hole. Cairn climbed out of the early trouble with seven straight points in a little over a minute to take a 9-7 lead. That run continued until the Highlanders held a 13-7 advantage with 5:12 remaining in the quarter after
Charlotte Camp hit a jumper.
Cairn held a lead through the rest of the half pushing the advantage to as many as nine points on three occasions. The latest the Highlanders held that nine-point lead was with 7:22 left in the second-quarter after another Camp jumper.
With 20 seconds left in the half Bryn Mawr had whittled the lead down to two points at 37-35, but Camp made a pair of free throws in the final seconds of the half to give the Highlanders a four-point half-time lead.
After the break, the Owls jumped all over the Highlanders and went on a 6-1 run to snag the lead at 41-40. Cairn weathered the quick start and with buckets by Emerick, Camp, Brodish, and
Kendra Stum went on an 8-0 run to take a 7-point lead 50-43 with 3:38 left in the quarter.
Bryn Mawr's leading scorer on the night, Erica Dwyer, then hit two threes to close the gap to six. Dwyer was a thorn in the Highlanders' side all night long. She recorded a career night with 26 points including a 7-11 mark from beyond the arc.
Clinging to a one-point lead heading into the fourth-quarter, the Highlanders took a firm grasp of the game with a 13-0 run to open the final stanza. After a
Kendra Stum tip in with 5:47 remaining in regulation the Highlanders led 63-49. Things got a little hairy when the Owls closed the gap to three at 66-63 and held the ball with 90 seconds remaining after a Highlanders' turnover.
After a missed jumper by Bryn Mawr and two free throws by
EJ Hartzler the Highlanders were able to breathe a little easier with a five-point advantage.
Cairn went 4-6 from the charity stripe in the final 60 seconds to secure the 72-65 victory.
The win moves Cairn to 1-1 on the season. The Highlanders will next take the floor on Monday when they host Penn State - Abington at 7:00 p.m. in the Mason Activity Center.
