Langhorne, PA – The Cairn women's soccer team traveled to Gwynedd Mercy on a chilly Tuesday afternoon and came away on the wrong-side of a 3-0 decision. The Griffins tallied twice before half-time and once after the break en route to the 3-0 victory.
The Highlanders outshot the Griffins 15-13 on the afternoon; however the Griffins put 12 of their 13 shots on frame to force
Payton Emerick to make nine saves between the pipes for the Highlanders.
The first attempt for the Griffins came in just the sixth minute. Lauren Melino broke open the scoring with a shot from outside the 18 over the hands of Emerick on the first shot of the match. The Griffins tallied again in the 22nd minute when Meghan Petroski got a feed from Melino to start a breakaway. Petroski found the back of the net to double the Gwynedd Mercy lead.
The Highlanders had their best opportunities late in the half when Cairn sent four shots in the final 15 minutes of the half.
Meghan Wilson accounted for half of the four shots, but both were turned away by the Gwynedd Mercy keeper.
Natalie Lyon and
Kelsey Lewis also had shots late in the half, but Lyon's sailed high and Lewis' was saved.
At halftime the Highlanders and Griffins were even in shots at 7-7, but Gwynedd Mercy held the ever important 2-0 lead.
After the break, the Griffins came out firing, taking the first five shots of the second-half. Three of the first four were saved by Emerick and the fourth went wide, but on a corner kick in the 68th minute Petroski connected on a header and gave the Griffins a 3-0 lead.
Gwynedd Mercy would hold on to win by the 3-0 margin despite eight shots by the Highlanders in the final 20 minutes.
Meghan Wilson led the Highlanders offensively with six shots in the match with five of those attempts on goal.
The loss drops the Highlanders to 5-9-1 overall and 2-7-1 in the CSAC. Cairn will next take the pitch on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. when they host Clarks Summit in their final match of the season.
