Jamaica, NY – Cairn University men's volleyball opened up the 2016 season with a 3-0 sweep at York College on Friday evening. The Highlanders showed no mercy to the Cardinals and won with set scores of 25-10, 25-11, and 25-13.
The first set for the Highlanders played out to the best as they hit 10 kills with four errors for a .316 hitting percentage. Cairn then hit seven kills in the next two sets, while York hit 11 kills for the entire match.
The area where Cairn held the biggest advantage was in service aces. The Highlanders had 24 service aces compared to two for the Cardinals.
Micah Godshall led the Highlanders in that category with 10 aces throughout the match.
Andy Willits followed with seven aces.
Willits and Godshall also led the team in total kills with nine and five, respectively. The two hitters came off of good freshman seasons and will be expected to lead the team in attacking this season.
David Dager hit four kills for the Highlanders.
Matthew Gump started as the setter and finished with 20 assists in the match. Gump also finished with three kills and three aces to go along with his performance.
Dan Winters and
Micah Godshall led the team in blocking with three block assists each.
Anson Webb and Frederis Tapia led the Cardinals in attacking with three kills each, while Larry Moore finished with two solo blocks.
Cairn will turn around and play Lancaster Bible College at home tomorrow, Saturday Jan. 30, with a 12 p.m. start time.
