Langhorne, PA – Cairn University hosted the University of Valley Forge on Tuesday evening in women's volleyball action and fell to the Patriots in three sets. Despite the score line, the Highlanders showed much improvement in the match compared to their first two in the 2015 season.
The Highlanders easily kept pace with the Patriots from the start of the first game and held an 8-6 lead. Cairn made a slight lineup change from their first two matches and started
Ashley Chamberlin as the setter. Chamberlin gave up just two ball-handling errors throughout the match and threw in five kills as well.
Despite leading early on, Cairn gave up a 9-0 run in the first set and just couldn't recover for a 25-16 loss in the first set.
Whitney Seidel led the team in kills in the match with seven, while
Haley Sheehan collected nine digs total.
The second set saw just two kills for the Highlanders versus 11 for the Patriots and Valley Forge took the set with a 25-13 score. Valley Forge was led by Megan Freed with 12 kills in the match; Jamie Summers had 24 assists, while Brittany Eberle added 11 digs.
Cairn recorded their best set of the night in the final stanza of the match, posting nine kills and just two attack errors. The Highlanders did find themselves down 15-5 at one point but they rallied back with the help of the crowd to get to 20-14. Valley Forge finished off the final set with a 25-18 advantage.
With the loss, the Highlanders dropped to 0-3 this season, while Valley Forge improved to 3-2 overall. Cairn will return to action this Saturday when they travel to Ramapo College for a tri-match.
