Langhorne, PA – The Highlanders improved to 1-1 in the CSAC on Wednesday afternoon following a 1-0 defeat of the Centenary College Cyclones. It was a hard-fought match between the two teams and it took a hard-fought goal to win it for Cairn University. The game was also a marked improvement over last year's 7-0 loss to the Cyclones.
Meghan Wilson took the ball at her feet just past the half-way mark on the field and eventually dribbled her way through three defenders. Once she got into the box she played the ball around the keeper and hit a shot from a hard angle into the bottom left of the goal.
The goal was Wilson's eighth of the season and occurred in the 72
nd minute of the game. The shot was one of only two shots on goal for the Highlanders in the game but it was all they would need. The defense did the rest of the work and kept the Cyclones off the board.
"Centenary is a great squad who really challenged us defensively," explained head coach
Laura Behnke after the match. "All 90 minutes proved to be a total team effort and I'm so proud of the heart and hustle we showed today."
The Cyclones challenged the Highlanders' net more than a few times throughout the match.
Mackenzie Paugh was forced to make eight saves in the game on some tough shots. One of those got by Paugh in the first half but the ball deflected off the crossbar.
The Cyclones were led by Amanda Benoit with seven shots and two on goal. The Highlanders were led in shots by
Courtney Novak with five, who also had the other shot on goal in the game.
Cairn improved to 3-5 overall with the win, while Centenary dropped to 1-7 overall and 0-2 in the CSAC. The Highlanders will return to action this Friday, Sept. 25, when they travel to Neumann University to take on the Knights.
