Scranton, PA – Cairn University women's tennis dropped to 2-2 in the CSAC on Saturday with a 7-2 loss to Marywood University. The Pacers remained unbeaten in the CSAC so far this season and moved to 3-0 with the win.
Marywood took all three doubles matches to open up the overall scoring, handing
Rebecca Graber and
Julia Derus their first doubles loss of the season. The no. 1 duo lost by an 8-5 score, while
Sara Keating and
Kara Williams lost 8-2 at no. 2 doubles, and Ricki Williams and
Melissa Chery were defeated 8-0 at no. 3 doubles.
"
Rebecca Graber and
Julia Derus put up a good fight in their 5-8 doubles set against Marywood," said head coach
Ken Wilson after the match. "[However], they showed that they could win by taking both of their singles matches easily."
Graber and Derus did just that by winning with scores of 6-2, 6-2, and 6-4, 6-2, respectively. Graber is now 6-0 in singles matches this season at the no. 1 position.
"We came into the match without two of our more solid players,
Samantha Shroyer and
Lauren Caruso, however we came away with our heads held high," continued Wilson. "Every competition is a growing experience; we are learning how to play smart by reading how the opponent plays and challenging their weaknesses."
With the loss, the Highlanders fell to 2-4 overall this season, while Marywood improved to 4-1 overall. Cairn will return to the courts this Saturday when they host the City College of New York at 12 p.m.
