Langhorne, PA – Cairn University finished their 2015 season this afternoon by hosting Neumann University for a doubleheader. The Highlanders nearly defeated the Knights on Friday afternoon in the single game but Neumann proved too much today and won 10-0 and 11-6.
Albert Taylor picked up the loss for Cairn in game one, while
Tyson Rohrs was on the mound in game two. As a senior, that was Rohrs' last game in a Cairn uniform; he went 6.2 innings and struck out three batters.
The Knights' pitching and defense was too strong in game one; Matt Anderson went 4.0 innings with four strikeouts and two hits given up. Chris Rupprecht then went 2.0 innings shutout innings with no hits and two strikeouts. Kevin Corris finished off the final inning for the Knights.
Joey Nieves-Markee,
Caleb Lang, and
Eric Hodges had the only hits for Cairn in the game. Hodges was also walked twice to finish the game 1-for-1.
The Highlanders fared better in game two against Bobby Sefick on the mound and tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the fourth inning.
John Burlaga knocked in Cairn's first two runs in the third with a single to score
Caleb Lang and
Caleb Moore.
Eric Hodges then stepped up a hit a long triple to center field to score
Mike Boucher and
Joffrey Rosa.
The games were also the last for Hodges in a Highlander uniform, as he is the other senior on the team this year.
Unfortunately the Highlanders could not keep the Knights at bay and allowed five runs to cross the plate in the fifth inning to go into a 9-4 deficit. The Highlanders got two runs back in the bottom of the inning though, to make it a 9-6 game. Burlaga hit a triple to right field to score a run and
Joffrey Rosa drove in a run with a single to center.
Neumann added two more in the top of the seventh inning to seal the win in game two, 11-6. The Knights improved to 18-12-1 overall and 11-7 in the conference with the wins. Cairn finished the season at 8-30 overall and 1-17 in the CSAC with the losses.
Cairn was led by
John Burlaga (2 h, 3 RBI) and
Caleb Lang (2 h, 2 r) in the second game from the plate. Lang finished the season with 60 hits, 55 RBI and a .444 average to lead the team.
Joey Nieves-Markee was second on the team with a .427 average, 53 hits, and a team-high .527 on-base percentage.
