La Plume, PA – The Cairn University softball team traveled to Keystone College on Monday afternoon to take on the Giants in conference action. Unfortunately, the Highlanders remained winless on the season after the games and suffered two losses (6-5, 12-4) to the Giants.
In game one, Cairn was in control and looked to be in good position to pull out a win. Keystone picked up the first run of the game in the third inning but Cairn scored four runs in the fifth to secure a 4-1 lead with two innings left. Up to that point, the Highlanders allowed just one hit from the Giants.
Keely Congleton started off the inning with a single to left field and advanced to second when
Rachel Clark walked.
Jessica Good then singled to center field to load up the bases.
Jocelyn Good brought them all home when she hit a bases clearing double.
Jocelyn Good scored shortly after when
Kelly Hendrickson hit a double of her own.
The Highlanders kept the Giants off the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth but Keystone tied up the game in the bottom of the sixth with three runs.
Cairn got the upper hand back when they scored a run in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI-single by
Brigid Shehan. It wouldn't be enough though, and Keystone managed to score two runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the victory away from the Highlanders.
Picking up the win for the Giants was Karissa Worobey; she also scored the game-tying run in the bottom of the seventh. Worobey also got the win in game two when the Giants won by a score of 12-4 in six innings.
Kelly Hendrickson picked up the loss from the circle in game two, while
Tiffany Gower had the loss in the first game.
Hendrickson also started the scoring in the second game of the afternoon when she hit a solo home run over the fence in left-center. The homer is the first for the Highlanders of the 2015 season.
Keystone's bats proved stronger in the second game though as they went on to score three runs over the first two innings and five more in the third for an 8-1 lead.
Brigid Shehan did her part to help get the team back into the game and hit the team's second home run of the game; Shehan's was also a solo shot, this time over the fence in right center.
Cairn brought the game back slightly at 9-4 but Keystone pulled out ahead with three runs in the sixth inning. The last run invoked the mercy rule and ended the game. The Highlanders finished with seven hits total, two from
Hannah Blackmer to lead the team. Five Highlanders had one hit in the game.
The Highlanders will have to fight another day for the first win of 2015; they take on Marywood University tomorrow, Apr. 7, with a home doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
