Highlanders Snap Streak With Big Wins Over UVF

Langhorne, PA – This afternoon the Highlanders snapped their nine game losing streak with two convincing wins over the University of Valley Forge (18-2, 6-0). Cairn University improved their overall record to 8-22 with the results, while Valley Forge dropped to 3-18 for the year.

Tristan Ortega pitched the first game for the Highlanders and went all seven innings while allowing just three hits and striking out 11 batters. The win is Ortega's first of the season in four appearances. Matt Trotman received the win in game two with a four-hit shutout; the win was Trotman's second of the season.

The Highlanders got things going early on with four runs in the bottom of the first inning and proceeded to score in every inning except for the sixth. Cairn blew the door open with nine runs in the bottom of the fifth inning alone.

Caleb Lang hit an RBI to start the inning and was the last to hit an RBI before the inning ended. Lang was also a triple away from hitting the cycle; Caleb hit a single, double, and a homerun to go 3-for-3 with seven RBI total. If the cycle could be completed across two games then he did that when he hit a triple in game two.

Lang's four hits and eight RBI over both games brings him to 52 hits and 52 RBI this season.

Five other Highlanders had a multi-hit game, including Caleb Moore who went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two walks. Eric Hodges was 2-for-2 with two RBI and two hit-by-pitch.

Moore continued to hit well in the second game and went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Two of Moore's hits were a double and a triple, giving him three doubles for the day. Tristan Ortega was the only other Highlander to have more than one hit in both games, with two in each.

In the second game Cairn didn't gain the lead until the third inning with one run. The Highlanders then scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to get to six for the game. Joey Nieves-Markee had two stolen bases in the game along with one in game one.

The Highlanders will hope to ride the momentum of the wins when they host Centenary College this Friday, Apr. 24, to start their weekend CSAC series.
