Scranton, PA – Despite nearly coming back in game one of the doubleheader, the Highlanders dropped two games to Marywood University on Saturday afternoon (8-6, 11-0). Cairn University fell to 6-21 overall with the losses and 1-10 in the CSAC.
The Highlanders were down 4-0 through five innings in game one of the doubleheader before using the long-ball to come back.
John Burlaga hit his 2
nd homerun of the year with a three-run shot in the top of the sixth. Cairn then tied the game 4-4 with an RBI-double from
Mike Boucher, scoring
Eric Hodges.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Marywood doubled their total by scoring four runs on two doubles and a single. The Pacers' Vince Rebar led the team with three hits, four RBI, and one run scored.
Cairn had one half of an inning to try to come back from an 8-4 deficit and once again turned to the long ball.
Caleb Lang hit his seventh homerun of the year and second in as many games. Lang's homer also scored
Joey Nieves-Markee to bring the score to 8-6. Unfortunately, Cairn couldn't complete the comeback and the game ended there.
Both teams had complete games from their pitchers;
Albert Taylor picked up the loss for the Highlanders, while Joseph DiLoreto got the win for the Pacers.
Marywood had even more success in the second game of the doubleheader with Justin Haddix on the mound. Haddix went for the complete game with 11 strikeouts and just one hit in the shutout. The Pacers' offense produced nine hits and put together a six-run fourth inning.
The lone hit belonged to
John Burlaga with a single in the top of the fifth inning.
Joey Nieves-Markee started the game on the mound for the Highlanders;
Matt Trotman and
John Burlaga also took turns pitching to the Pacers in the game.
Cairn University will now have to turn around and play at Keystone College on Sunday, Apr. 19, for a make-up game that was postponed.
