Langhorne, PA – Cairn University softball hosted Immaculata University on Saturday afternoon and were defeated in both games of the doubleheader, 4-0 and 14-3. The Highlanders registered four hits in the first-game shutout and seven hits in the 14-3 loss.
Kelly Hendrickson pitched all seven innings in the first game and recorded seven strikeouts against the Mighty Macs' hitters. Hendrickson held the Mighty Macs to just one run in through the first five innings but gave up three in the final two.
Four different Highlanders had one hit in the game; all of which were singles. Cairn's best opportunity to score came in the bottom of the fourth inning when
Jocelyn Good laid down a nice slap-bunt single to lead off the inning. However, Immaculata pulled off a double play right afterwards to stop Cairn's momentum.
The Mighty Macs were led by Annemarie Bartow who went 3-4 with one RBI. Meghan Kugler and Paige Hughes also registered two hits in the game, with one run and one RBI coming from Kugler.
In the next game of the doubleheader, the Mighty Macs started out with a jolt; scoring six runs in the top of the first on just three hits. In the game, Immaculata scored 14 runs on 11 hits. Meghan Kugler recorded the win with four innings pitched and five strikeouts.
Tiffany Gower pitched all five innings for the Highlanders in game two and recorded nine groundouts.
Brigid Shehan led the Highlanders with two hits and one run scored.
Keely Congleton and
Alexandra Nathan also scored runs for the Highlanders in the game.
Jessica Piccolo had two RBI on one double to deep left-center field.
With the two losses, Cairn dropped to 0-22 on the season and 0-10 in the CSAC. Immaculata improved to 5-13 overall and 5-3 in the conference with the wins. The Highlanders will have to turn around and play tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Gwynedd Mercy University to play their games that were rained out on Friday.
