Highlanders' Late Rally Not Enough To Beat Griffins

Gwynedd Valley, PA – The Highlanders traveled to Gwynedd Mercy University in softball to take on the Griffins in a CSAC doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. Cairn registered more hits than Gwynedd Mercy in both games but left with two losses on the scoresheet, 8-6 and 8-3.

The Griffins opened up an 8-1 lead in game one of the doubleheader, scoring four runs each in the first and third innings. The Highlanders tried their best to get in the game, though their efforts weren't quite enough to catch up to the Griffins.

Jessica Good and Hannah Blackmer both collected three hits in the game; Kelly Hendrickson scored three runs in the game, with Jocelyn Good scoring two runs. Brigid Shehan collected three RBI on two hits.

Cairn cut the deficit to 8-3 in the top of the fifth inning and in the top of the sixth Kelly Hendrickson got the momentum on the Highlanders' side with a two-RBI triple. Hendrickson's hit got the team to within three at 8-5 and Brigid Shehan singled to score Hendrickson and bring the score to 8-6.

The Highlanders had a good chance to tie the game in the top of the seventh inning when Alexandra Nathan and Hannah Blackmer were on second and third base with one out. Unfortunately, Cairn then hit two fly-outs and stranded the runners on their bases to end the game.

In game two of the doubleheader, Cairn tied up the game at 3-3 after the top of the fourth inning. Rachel Clark, Alexandra Nathan, and Jessica Good each had one RBI to get the team their three runs.

The Griffins then took a 4-3 advantage in the bottom of the fourth inning and added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth to seal the 8-4 win for the Griffins. Tiffany Gower and Kelly Hendrickson took one loss apiece on the day as the team moved to 0-24 on the season. The Highlanders are now 0-12 in the CSAC this season.

The Highlanders will next travel to Penn State Hazelton on Wednesday, Apr. 15, to take on the Nittany Lions for a non-conference doubleheader.
