Langhorne, PA - Rutgers Newark University came to Cairn University on Wednesday evening where they got the better of the Highlanders in a 3-0 sweep (10-25, 17-25, 19-25). The Highlanders also lost 3-0 earlier in the season when they traveled to the Scarlet Raiders in February.
The Scarlet Raiders came out of the gate firing on all cylinders and started the game on an 8-0 run en route to a 25-10 win in the first set. Rutgers had three blocks in those first eight points and finished with 16 block assists in the match. Cairn had seven kills in the first set with eight attack errors.
Leading the way in kills for the Highlanders in the match was
Andy Willits with six.
Josiah Buss followed him with five; each player had one more error than they had kills.
Alex Lower finished with 20 assists and the defense was led by
Matthew Rhodes with 11 digs.
Cairn took advantage of seven attacking errors by the Scarlet Raiders in the second set but could only manage four kills to fall 25-17. Jose Mendez led Rutgers Newark in attacking with 11 kills in the match. It appeared as though Rutgers could dig everything that came there way - evident by Quocmy Nguyen's 18 digs in the match.
The Highlanders hit their highest amount of kills in the third set with 10 but again the Scarlet Raiders stayed one step ahead and won the set 25-19.
Randall Colson made his return to the court tonight after missing a few games due to injury but only had nine attempts and three kills.
With the loss, Cairn drops to 9-12 overall and remains winless in the CVC at 0-7. Rutgers Newark improved to 12-7 overall and 5-1 in the conference for 2015. The Highlanders will next travel to Thiel College for their first meeting this season on Friday night at 6 p.m.
