Langhorne, PA – The Highlanders hosted the Nittany Lions of Penn State Abington on Tuesday afternoon for a non-conference matchup. For Abington, the games were the first of their season after having cancelled the first few of their schedule.
Cairn held the advantage on hits in the first game, 9-6, but could not gain an advantage on the scoreboard and fell 5-3. The Highlanders were outpaced in the second game of the afternoon and lost 15-0 to the Nittany Lions.
Eight of the Highlanders' hits were spread across four different players in the first game. Registering two hits each were
Jessica Good,
Kelly Hendrickson,
Brigid Shehan, and
Hannah Blackmer. Hendrickson and Shehan each picked up an RBI as well.
Abington took the lead 2-0 in the first inning but Cairn came back to tie the game at 2-2 in the second inning.
Jessica Good scored on Hendrickson' RBI in the bottom of the first and then
Tiffany Gower scored on a groundout by
Jocelyn Good in the second. Abington then scored three runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-2 lead.
In the fifth inning,
Brigid Shehan hit a double back to the fence that scored Hendrickson and cut the lead to 5-3. Shehan got on base later in the seventh inning but the Highlanders couldn't capitalize and the 5-3 score was final. Gower recorded the loss for Cairn and Emily Wrenn picked up her first win of the the year for Abington.
In game two, Abington held Cairn to just two hits and had 14 hits of their own in the five-inning game. The Nittany Lions scored eight runs in the fifth inning to seal the deal.
Kelly Hendrickson started the second game for Cairn and picked up the loss, while Jennifer Rakita picked up her first win of 2015 from the circle.
The Highlanders will take a day off and then host Penn State Berks on Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m.
