Langhorne, PA - The Highlanders hosted the Falcons of Cedar Crest College on Saturday afternoon for their first CSAC games of the 2015 season. Unfortunately, the Highlanders could not get their first wins of the season, suffering 4-3 and 7-4 losses to the Falcons.
Cairn led early on in game one of the doubleheader, scoring two runs in the first inning.
Jessica Piccolo doubled, scoring
Kelly Hendrickson and
Jessica Good. Cedar Crest cut the lead to one later in the inning and the Highlanders held the one run lead until the seventh.
With a 3-2 advantage, Cairn took the field to try to fend off the Falcons. The first batter up for Cedar Crest hit a triple to put them in a good spot to tie the game. The Falcons did just that with their next batter and knotted the game at 3-3.
The Highlanders turned a double play on the ensuing sequence to get to two outs with no runners on base. Despite having no runners on with two outs, Cedar Crest was able to load the bases with two singles and a walk. The next batter up then hit a single to center field to bring home the winning runner.
Cairn recorded six hits in the game to Cedar Crest's 16.
Kelly Hendrickson led the team with two hits in three at bats.
Tiffany Gower was in the circle for the Highlanders and recorded the loss.
In game two of the doubleheader, both teams scored two runs in the first inning but the lead was taken over by Cedar Crest in the third inning. Kaylee Martinez found a sweet spot on the bat and hit a homerun and a 3-2 lead for the Falcons.
The Falcons added two more runs in the third to come out with a 5-2 lead. Cairn then cut the deficit to one in the fourth inning when
Keely Congleton hit a single to bring in
Hannah Blackmer and
Jessica Piccolo. Unfortunately that was all that the Highlanders could put on the board before Cedar Crest added a run in the fourth and sixth innings.
Kelly Hendrickson was in the circle for Cairn in game two and recorded the loss. The Highlanders are now 0-12 for 2015. Cedar Crest improved to 3-8 overall with the wins and opened CSAC competition with a 2-0 start. The Highlanders will next play on Monday, Mar. 30, when they travel to Arcadia University.
