Owings Mills, MD - The Highlanders traveled to Stevenson University Friday evening for their third CVC game this season and fell in three sets to the Mustangs. Stevenson recently came off of a 3-1 win against Eastern Mennonite University and handed Cairn their third conference loss of the year.
The Mustangs did not have any response to the attacking of
Randall Colson throughout the match; the junior hit 12 kills with just one error for a .733 attacking percentage.
Josiah Buss also played well for Cairn with 11 kills.
Alex Lower assisted on 34 kills for the Highlanders as well.
Unforced errors are what plagued the Highlanders in this match; 22 attacking errors were committed by Cairn in the match to six for Stevenson. Twelve of those errors took place in the first set alone by the Highlanders. Cairn started off on the wrong foot and just couldn't make up the ground on Stevenson.
Ryan Garven hit the court for the first time this season after being out with an injury and made his presence felt with six kills hitting out of the front and back rows. Leading the team in digs for the match was
Josiah Buss with 13, followed by
Matthew Rhodes and Lower with seven each.
As a team, Stevenson hit a .372 attack percentage and were led by Kyle Wisner with 12 kills. As the setter, David Moler had 38 assists in the match.
Cairn looked like they would be able to recover from the two-set deficit in the third set. The Highlanders hit 16 kills with five errors in the third stanza but the Mustangs were nearly error free in the third set to take the win.
The Highlanders dropped to 7-7 overall with the loss and are now 0-3 in the CVC. Stevenson improved to 6-5 overall and 2-0 in the conference. Cairn will drive down to Virginia tonight to start the day tomorrow with a match at Marymount University at 11:30 a.m.
