Highlanders Open CSAC Slate With 91-78 Win Over Immaculata

Langhorne, PA – The Highlanders remain unbeaten on the young season with a 91-78 win over Immaculata University to open conference competition. Cairn improved to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference with the win. Since Cairn has been in the CSAC, the Highlanders have not started conference play with a win.

In the previous games this season, the Highlanders scored 11 points or more from off the bench. Against the Mighty Macs, Cairn's starters played into their role and scored 87 of team's 91 points. Jason Kuntzelman (Mount Joy, PA) led the team with 28 points and was followed closely by Gerroid Doughty II (Raleigh, NC) with 26.

Doughty also finished with a team-leading nine rebounds and five steals. Kuntzelman scored 15 of his points from beyond the arc (5-11) and shot 55.5% overall. Julian Collazo (Lancaster, PA) also had a solid game for the Highlanders with his 18 points, six rebounds, and three assists.

For the second game in a row, Cairn went into the halftime break trailing to their opponent. Immaculata shot 53.6% through the first 20 minutes and led 46-41. However, the Highlanders immediately turned the game around to start the second half and tied the game within the first minute 46-46.

"If everybody did what we needed them to do and took care of their responsibilities, then we would be able to take care of business," said head coach Jason O'Connell about his talk to the players at halftime. "We have a lot of young guys as well as upperclassmen that have really stepped it up in the gym with their jumpers, so I wasn't surprised when they started making shots."

Cairn took the lead for the last time at the 15:17 mark in the second half with a layup by Kuntzelman. The Highlanders were able to put much more pressure on the Mighty Macs in the second half and forced them to miss more shots. The Highlanders began to run away with the game halfway through the stanza when they took a double-digit point lead, 70-59.

The Highlanders did not give up the double-digit lead for the rest of the game and held their largest lead of 17 points at the four-minute mark. Jordan Sharpe (Langhorne, PA) played his highest number of minutes this season in the game and went 3-3 from the floor and 2-2 from the free-throw line. Sharpe also collected two blocks and four rebounds.

The Mighty Macs were led by Roy Ferrell Jr. with 21 points, followed by Matt Simon with 16 points, and Mike Piekarski with 13 points and 15 rebounds. Immaculata turned the ball over 16 times throughout the game, which the Highlanders were able to score 21 points off of.

With the loss, Immaculata drops to 0-3 this season and 0-1 in the CSAC. Cairn will next travel to Swarthmore College on Saturday, Nov. 28, to take on the Garnet for a 3 p.m. game.
