La Plume, PA – The Highlanders dropped their first overtime game this season at Keystone College on Tuesday evening with a 4-3 result. Unfortunately, Cairn will come up just shy of a CSAC playoff run and finish in 7th place in the conference with their 5-6 record.
It was an action-packed game that Cairn appeared to be in control of until the tying goal was scored in the 74th minute of the game. Shots taken were even with 21 for each team; Keystone had one more shot on goal with 17 to Cairn's 16.
The Highlanders opened up the scoring in the 32nd minute with a goal by
Payton Emerick (Hyndman, PA/Calvary Christian Academy) and the assist from
Alyssa Leister (Montgomery Township, PA/Christopher Dock).
Meghan Wilson (New Hope, PA/New Hope-Solebury) added Cairn's second of the game in the 38th minute, this one assisted by Leister and
Alicia Geistdorfer (Perkiomenville, PA/Christopher Dock).
With the 2-0 lead at the half, Cairn looked to be in good shape for the finish. However, Keystone came right out of the gate with their first goal on a header by Nina Carbonaro in the 47th minute.
Cairn stretched the lead back out the two goals just minutes later when Emerick slotted her second of the game on a rebounded shot from Geistdorfer.
Keystone applied pressure from there, though, and cut the lead to 3-2 in the 62nd minute. Carbonaro then scored the tying goal in the 74th minute for the Giants. Jenna Moranski and Jayleen Galeno assisted her second goal of the game.
Both teams had chances for the remainder of regulation time but it had to be decided in overtime with the 3-3 tie game. The Giants didn't waste any time in the first overtime period and notched the game-winner less than a minute in. Brittany Sugalski netted a one-time shot to the far post on a pass from Moranski.
The Highlanders dropped to 7-10 overall with the loss and 5-6 in the conference. Keystone improved to 7-8-1 overall and 7-4 in the conference with the win. Despite missing out on the playoffs, this year saw the most CSAC wins on any women's soccer team in program history.
