Langhorne, PA – Cairn University women's volleyball hosted Gwynedd Mercy University on Saturday morning and dropped a three-setter to the Griffins. The Highlanders made the first set competitive at 25-20, but lost the next two 25-10, and 25-13.
Haley Sheehan (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown Community H.S.) led the Highlanders in kills for the first time this season with eight out of the team's 15 total.
Whitney Seidel (Harleysville, PA/Upper Bucks Christian) had three kills along with three aces for the Highlanders. Seidel and
Abigail Litman (Lebanon, PA/New Covenant Christian School) led the team in digs with nine each.
The Griffins took a 12-5 lead to start off the first set, but the Highlanders worked their way back from there. Cairn went on an 8-1 run with
Katelynn Reiss (Bensalem, PA/Bensalem H.S.) at the service line to tie the game at 13-13.
The teams then played each other point for point until the Griffins took a 19-18 lead. From there Gwynedd Mercy finished off the set on a 6-2 run to win 25-20.
Cairn was plagued by errors in the second set, whereas the Griffins only committed two attacking errors to win 25-10.
The Highlanders were within a point of the Griffins in set three at 9-8, but Gwynedd Mercy would utilize an 11-0 run from there pull too far ahead of Cairn. Gwynedd finished with 38 kills total and a .214 attacking percentage.
With the loss, Cairn dropped to 0-16 on the season and 0-8 in the conference. Gwynedd Mercy improved to 8-13 overall and 5-2 in the CSAC with the win. The Highlanders will next host Bryn Athyn College on Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 7 p.m.
