The Mason Activity Center was humming with anticipation tonight for the in-conference rivalry game between the Highlanders and Defenders, and this contest lived up to its billing.  The early stages of this game started off fairly even, until Cairn threw the first punch about six minutes in, when a pair of free throws by Omar Askia capped an 8-0 run that gave the Highlanders a six point lead.  Askia was absolutely huge for the Highlanders in the first half; as everytime Cairn needed a basket the junior forward answered the call.  Coach Show's BBC Defenders proved their resiliency and battled back to tie the Highlanders and even take the lead near the end of the first half.  A free throw from Azariah Parmer with ten seconds left gave the Highlanders a one point lead at the close of the first half.

The entire Cairn team played a complete contest and while the Highlanders were carried by fifteen points from Askia in the first half, and eight points from Kyle Bonner  countless other players stepped up over the course of tonight's affairs.  The Highlanders, despite their first half lead, trailed almost the entire second half until the guard tandem of JD Zamroz and Obed Rivera made their marks upon tonight's contest.  Rivera splashed a three pointer and made a layup on back to back possessions to give the Highlanders a one point lead with forty seconds left.  BBC's Dan Dodd made one of two free throws to tie things at 66 with the twenty-five seconds left, and the Highlanders holding the ball for the last shot.  That's when Zamroz made his move; starting on the left side Zamroz crossed over into the middle of the floor and stuck a fadeaway jumper from around the foul line with two seconds on the clock to give the Highlanders a satisfying last second victory.
