Cairn Scares Cabrini, Falls in Shootout

Box Score Langhorne, PA- Cairn hosted the number two ranked team in the nation, Cabrini College, on Monday night and the Highlanders took the Cavaliers all the way to wire, eventually falling 103-96.

Box Score

Tonight's contest featured offense, offense, and more offense as the two teams absolutely lit up the scoreboard in the Mason Activity Center.  The Highlanders came out of the gate a little tentative, perhaps star-struck by Cabrini's national ranking.  The Cavaliers led by a score of 20-9 within the first five minutes of the game and would continue to shoot the lights out for the remainder of the half.  Cairn though, was able to endure the hot-shooting Cabrini attack, thanks in large part to an excellent first half from guard, JD Zamroz.  Zamroz ended the half with 9 points, and 5 assists, but the freshman's contributions could not be measured purely on the stat sheet.  Darnell Clowney also came up huge for the Highlanders, as the junior guard scored eight points, in addition to doing his very best to control the scintillating scoring performance of Cabrini guard Vinny Walls.  Cabrini shot 64% from the field and 65% from the three point line, and Cairn went into the break trailing 58-44.

At the start of the second half Walls continued his hot-shooting, as the guard poured in twelve points to start the second half, stretching Cabrini's lead all the way to twenty-four points, 74-50.  At about this time is when Cairn's freshman forward Azariah Parmer began to feel some heat of his own. Parmer entered the contest at about the sixteen minute mark, and would score an impressive eighteen points over the next sixteen minutes.  Parmer and Zamroz slowly wore at the Cavalier lead with a barrage of long range jumpers, coming as close as six points with around one minute left.  In the end, Cabrini proved why they are the number two team in the nation, as they were able to hold on and defeat the Highlanders, 103-96.

Cairn's statistical leaders for the night were:

JD Zamroz (23 points, 6 assists)
Azariah Parmer (18 points, 4 rebounds, 2 blocks)
Darnell Clowney (14 points, 7 rebounds, 3 blocks)
Obed Rivera (13 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists)

Cairn will travel to Scranton Wednesday night to face CSAC opponent Marywood University at 8:00 PM.
