Langhorne, PA - In their CSAC and home-opener, the Cairn women's basketball team fell prey to the Gwynedd Mercy Griffins' offense and lost 93-38. The loss dropped the Highlanders to 2-4 overall this season, while Gwynedd Mercy improved to 3-3 with the win.
Amie Eppolito led the Highlanders in scoring with 13 points and
Britney Jackson led all players in rebounds with 18. The Griffins were led by Olivia Bradford with 16 points, while three other players landed in double digits in scoring.
The Highlanders started the game out strong and led 18-9 by the 12:30 mark in the first half. Eppolito hit a couple of three-pointers and Jackson worked the ball down low near the basket to give Cairn the nine-point advantage.
However, Gwynedd Mercy pounced on the Highlanders from there and rattled off a 20-0 run to take a 29-18 lead. The Griffins picked up the pace and forced the Highlanders to commit turnovers and take low percentage shots.
Gwynedd Mercy continued to make plays throughout the first half and went into the locker rooms with a 47-28 lead. The Griffins were able to connect passes and take good shots from around the rim; Gwynedd Mercy had nine assists in the first half to Cairn's three.
The Griffins didn't let up the pressure in the second half and held the Highlanders to just 10 points throughout the second 20 minutes. Overall, Cairn shot 19% from the field and 21% from three-point range. Gwynedd Mercy shot 48% from the field and 53% from long range.
Cairn will take the result into the winter break and return to action on January 5th for a home contest against Cedar Crest College.
