Allentown, PA – Cairn University concluded the Scotty Wood Tournament on Saturday, playing a tough final game against FDU-Florham. Though the Highlanders came up short for a second time with a loss of 60-77, they proved themselves strong and made FDU-Florham work hard for their win. The Highlanders continue their season 0-3 and FDU-Florham, with the win improves to 1-2 on the season.
Determined to finish the weekend tournament on a high note, the Highlanders came out fighting hard in the beginning of the first half. Starting for Cairn was
Reuben Lacy,
JD Zamroz,
Don Sloan,
Azariah Parmer, and
Jordan Sharpe. Sharpe took the tipoff jump for Cairn against FDU's Kevin Furlong. The Highlanders played a solid defensive first half with quick rebounds scoring 21 points. Senior
Omar Askia led the Highlanders with 24 total points, followed by Lacy who brought in 16 total points, as well as 1 assist and 2 steals. Junior
Kyle Bonner put up 12 points, along with Zamroz who scored 5 points and 1 assist. Sophomore
Nick Castillo was able to sneak in 3 points and 1 block for the Highlanders. The Highlanders scored another 39 points in the second half.
Starting lineup for the FDU Devils were Kevin Furlong, Michael Barber, Veon Lassiter, Steve Herdman and Donte Ali. Furlong led with 21 points for FDU, posting 2 blocks and 7 assists. Barber contributed 15 total points and 1 block, followed next by Lassiter who scored 13 points, and Steve Herdman who put up 7 points. The Devils were relentless opponents for Cairn, striking back hard against every Highlander advance. FDU-Florham dominated on the glass scoring 41 points in the first half and 36 points in the second half.
"We didn't get the results we were looking for this weekend but we continued to compete until the end of each game," said head coach
Jason O'Connell. "We had spurts where we really looked good. As we continue to grow we will put together a full game. We are looking forward to our game on Monday. Our guys are excited for our first CSAC game of the season."
