Langhorne, PA - On a cold and rainy afternoon, Cairn men's soccer fell to the Marywood Pacers 2-0 to finish off their 2014 campaign. The Pacers scored one goal in each half and improved their CSAC record to 7-2 this season. With the loss, the Highlanders dropped to 2-13-1 on the year and 1-8 in the conference.
Today also marked senior day for the Highlanders - Seth Richardson, Justin Nolan, and Nathan Woodcock were recognized as the graduating men's soccer players.
Marywood dictated the pace of the game early on and got five shots off in the first 20 minutes of play. Cairn had some chances in the first half but they didn't have enough behind them to test the Pacers' keeper.
The Highlanders gave up some chances by committing 17 fouls throughout the game. The ref may have been quick to the whistle as he also gave out nine to the Pacers. Play on the field was physical on both sides and led to good opportunities.
One of those fouls led to a shot for the Pacers that went through Caleb Pancoast as he collided with another player but was blocked by Andrew Gordon. Gordon's clear attempt went directly to David Hull who put in the open-net goal. Three players went to the ground on the play but all eventually got up to play on.
In the 58th minute, Hull had another opportunity to bury a goal on a header but Pancoast was up to the task. Andrew Gordon had a similar header on the other side of the field minutes later, but his attempt was blocked.
Marywood's second goal started off of the foot of Hull and his cross found the streaking foot of Casey Peckio to seal the win for the Pacers. The Highlanders chances ended after a shot by Justin Nolan that went wide shortly after the goal was scored.
With the season at its end for the Highlanders, the men's soccer team will have to look forward to 2015 and training in the offseason.
