Box Score Box ScoreGwynedd Valley, PA - Cairn University men's soccer continues to slide as they dropped a close matchup to Gwynedd Mercy University today 2-1. The Highlanders went down 2-0 early but got a goal back with 15 minutes remaining in the game. Justin Nolan got his shot past the keeper to cut the deficit in half but the Highlanders could not put away an equalizer.
Gwynedd Mercy took advantage early in the game when a clear by Ivan Jasso went to a Griffin player who put away the goal in the third minute of the game. The highlanders were unable to generate offense after the mishap and gave up the winning goal just over ten minutes later. However, the Highlanders kept the Griffins off the board for the remainder of the half, helped by Jasso's three saves in front of the net.
The two CSAC teams appeared to be in a stalemate for the first 30 minutes of the second half with no team gaining an advantage over the other. In the 75th minute, Nolan got away from his defenders and fired a hard shot past the Griffin keeper to bring the Highlanders back into the game.
Less than seven minutes later, Andrew Gordon had a great opportunity with a header directed towards the goal but Ryan Oyola took away the equalizer and held the score at 2-1. Three more shots came from the Highlanders offense in the final ten minutes but none could find their way on frame.
The loss drops Cairn to a 1-9-1 record overall, while the win for Gwynedd Mercy brings them to 3-9 on the year. Cairn will next play Keystone College at home this Saturday, 10/11, with game time scheduled for 1 p.m.
