Highlanders Steal Win From Immaculata In 3-0 Sweep

Immaculata, PA - Cairn University cruised to a 3-0 sweep of Immaculata University on Tuesday night and improved their CSAC record to 6-2 this season. The Highlanders collected 37 total kills against the Mighty Macs and, more impressively, registered 53 digs as a team.

The Highlanders gathered momentum in the first set when they went on a 7-0 run after a tie at 6-6. The Mighty Macs brought the match back to 13-16 but the Highlanders pulled away with an 8-1 run and then finished off the first set 25-17.

The Highlanders were led by Kate Steger in the match with 14 kills on 27 attempts for an attack percentage of .481. Sami Delfino chipped in with 30 assists and 14 digs. Brigid Shehan added 14 digs as well, along with nine kills.

The second set of the match proved very similar to the first - Cairn pulled away early and did not relinquish the lead for the entirety. The Highlanders killed the ball 12 times and committed five errors in both the first and second sets. Cairn won the second set over Immaculata 25-20.

Immaculata saw the same similarity in their stats from the first two sets but pushed harder in the third set. The final set provided 11 tie scores and eight lead changes.

The Mighty Macs took a three-point lead at 13-10 but the Highlanders came back to take the lead 17-15 after a 7-2 run. Little errors were committed in the third set, which provided for exciting action with kill after kill.

Immaculata took the lead again at 20-19 but it would be their last of the night. Cairn finished off the match with a 6-1 run; three of those points off of kills by Steger.

The win improved the Highlanders' overall record to 11-14, while the loss took Immaculata's record to 14-7 overall. Cairn will next face off with Cabrini College on Thursday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m. in the Mason Activity Center.
