Box Score
Allentown, PA - Senior
Amara Mills and freshman
Alicia Curry each netted two goals in helping the Highlanders overpower Cedar Crest College 6-2 on Friday afternoon.
Last year, the Falcons knocked off the Highlanders 1-0. This time around, it was a completely different story. In the 11th minute, Amara Mills scored the first goal of the season for Cairn to put the Highlanders up 1-0. But the Falcons had no intention of letting the game get away from them early and less than three minutes later they had managed to tie the game at 1-1.
Scoring her first collegiate goal for the Highlanders, rookie Alicia Curry put Cairn back up, 2-1, in the 29th minute. It didn't take long before the striker doubled her goal-tally. Just two minutes later, Curry put the Highlanders up 3-1.
The offense continued to rule the game as Cedar Crest pegged a goal back just before halftime, through Courtney Long's second strike, to make it a 3-2 scoreline going into the break.
The second half started off a little slower than the first, as both defenses seemed to tighten up, although Cairn still had the run of play going in their favor. The Falcons defense would crack once again though in the 64th minute as another freshman would tally her first college goal,
Alyssa Leister giving Cairn a 4-2 cushion.
Mills knocked in her second of the game in the 71st minute to make it 5-2, before sophomore midfielder
Laurisa Wager got on the scoresheet with a blast in the 74th minute, closing out the scoring.
The Highlanders outshot the Falcons 23-7.
Senior goalkeeper Sara Poole made four saves in net for Cairn, earning the win.
It is the first win on the season-opener for the women's team since 2001, a stretch that saw them go 0-10-1 in that time.
Cairn returns to Lanhgorne for their home-opener against a strong Wesley College on September 5 at 4pm.
