Clarks Summit, PA - Cairn University and Baptist Bible College combined for 47 runs between the two of them in their doubleheader on Monday afternoon, with both teams taking a share of the spoils.
The Highlanders jumped to an early 3-0 lead in game one. With the bases loaded,
Hannah Blackmer drove in
Kelly Hendrickson with a bunt.
Brigid Shehan scored the second run on a passed ball before
Kristen Hubler crossed home on a
Rachel Clark single to left center.
Following a single Baptist run in the bottom of the first, Cairn's
Jessica Good scored from a Hubler drive up the middle to center field, making it 4-1 to the visitors.
The Defenders took the lead in the bottom of the second with four runs to take a 5-4 lead. BBC would score two runs in both the third and sixth innings to stretch their lead to 9-4, while shutting down the Highlanders offense from the third inning on.
Cairn out hit the Defenders 8-7, but left eight runners on base.
Both Shehan and Blackmer registered two hits each, with Shehan going 2 for 2 and Blackmer finishing 2 for 4.
Rachel Deman went the full seven innings for Baptist Bible, while Cairn's pitching tandem of Jess Good and Kelly Hendrickson split the workload, each pitching three innings.
If game one seemed like your typical college softball game, game two seemed like a football score. Cairn and BBC combined for 34 runs and 38 hits in the nightcap.
There was at least one scored in each inning with the exception of the sixth inning.
Starting with the Highlanders, Hubler's single gave Cairn a 1-0 lead, driving in the speedy Jess Good. BBC closed out the first inning leading 2-1 with two runs of their own.
Cairn responded with three runs in the top of the second, starting with Clark's score. Kelly Hendricksons two-run double to center field drove in both
Ashley Mitchell and
Erin Meade, pushing Cairn's advantage to 4-2. Hendrickson would later make it 5-2 when scoring off of a wild pitch.
Not to be outdone, the Defenders tied things up at 5-5 in the bottom of the inning off of a two-run single from Alyssa Rockefeller and Hannah Strayers triple that scored Rockefeller.
After falling behind in the third, the Highlanders batted through the line-up plus two and tagged the host for five runs, surging ahead 11-6.
The Highlanders eventually led 13-7 when the Defenders started their fight back, cutting Cairn's lead to only 13-12 following the bottom of the fifth.
With their advantage now dwindled, the Highlanders looked to regain a wider margin scorching the Defenders for six runs in the seventh and found themselves ahead 19-12.
With only one out, BBC tallied three runs in the bottom of the seventh and were threatening to mount a final comeback before the Highlanders closed the door, claiming a 19-15 victory.
Every single Highlander recorded at least one hit, with six different players earning two or more. None more than Kristen Hubler, who went a solid 4 for 6 with two runs and three RBIs. Kelly Hendrickson went 3 for 5 with three RBIs while Ashley Mitchell finished 3 for 4. Brigid Shehan joined Hendrickson and Hubler with three RBIs as well, going 2 for 4. Rachel Clark and Hannah Blackmer both completed 2 for 5 performances and both scoring three times.
It's not often you give up 15 runs, 14 earned, and live to tell about it but that's what happened with Kelly Hendrickson on the mound. She did enough to earn her fourth win of the season and eighth of her career.
Alyssa Rockefeller and Hannah Strayer each went 4 for 5 for Baptist Bible.
At the end of the day, the Highlanders find themselves 6-25 overall and 2-18 in conference play.
On Wednesday, Cairn will travel to Eastern University for a non-conference showdown starting at 3pm.
